Evita.... #2.
Based off what I learned from Audition #1 and from books I have read and Youtube channels that I have watched on auditioning for musical theater, tonight went... OK.
Music Selection:
After a bit of a panic last night on which songs to sing to show my range, I got one right out of two.... 50/50 are not bad odds. I sang Think of Me from Phantom of the Opera, which was perfect. I also chose Take Me or Leave Me from Rent... that was a bad choice.
Think of Me: This went well, I had some nerves to start and was a little shaky, but pulled it together. The music director had me re-sing a few parts to this after he gave me some direction on what he wanted me to do with my voice. At first I used my airy song bird strength, which he liked, however wanted me to add some vocal frye to belt out some notes. Based on a five minute conversation, I think I accomplished this.
Take Me or Leave Me: NEVER sing RENT at an audition. I performed it well and channeled my inner Maureen, and had some stage presence (or not boring as my husband would say), but it did not work. I would like to blame the piano for being out of tune (which I am pretty sure it was sharp), but I have to accept it and say, it was not a good song.... I should have sang something different...but I digress.
What this has taught me, is to work on combining both. I had a mini-lesson tonight, and it is something I plan to incorporate in my next 2 auditions.
It was only a singing audition- if I get a call back, I will know tomorrow. However it was ONLY my second time in YEARS. I am maintaining a positive attitude, which I think out of all the research I have done, which has been a lot....I run a bit on the anxious side at times... perhaps a bit obsessive... however, as part of the wisdom I impart from a lady with dreams of the stage.... when you leave and audition... always say NEXT! and chalk it up for experience. On my drive home, I starting listening to my next audition song from "The Little Mermaid" (which I am not doing Part of Your World) on my ride home:)
I was blessed tonight that it was a closed audition and everyone was incredibly nice and friendly, including the others who where auditioning. I feel as though if I got a part within the cast, it would be a great place to start as everyone was incredibly friendly and warm.
Cheers for now!
Sing like no one is listening, Dance Like no one is watching, and Act with passion!
